really wasn't expecting Pomp and Circumstance soundtrack

There would be no music actually on the film. Music was provided "on site" by either an orchestra, piano or theatre organ. When this film was shown on British TV accompaniment had been dubbed in America by Gaylord Carter on the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ!

Buster Keaton is best thing to ever happen to silent comedies.

Sound was the worst thing to ever happen to movies.

I have a much bigger appreciation now for silent films ever since I read a book on body language. I've always been a fan of the movies, but never have I watched many silent films. I want to see some Buster Keaton movies now. Always meant to...

great video and one of the very best silent movie actors. perfect description too.

I don't know where my copy of this movie comes from (other than the bargain bin @ Wal-Mart), but I've never come across a version of this movie where the score is as good as the one I have. The score on the DVD I own captures the essence of the 1800s south perfectly.

Is the old "General" still around or was she scrapped..??
AllegroLibre - Posted on Sep 11, 2009
This is not the score. It doesn't fit at all. It's ridiculous.
pwnyoubitch - Posted on Oct 13, 2009
The passion of Joan of Arc is better.
Domcrad - Posted on Oct 25, 2009
They were all scrapped for WWII I'm afraid.

"The General" was recently released on DVD with a LOAD of extra material (including interviews with Keaton himself!) - and, best of all, a brand new musical score composed especially for the movie by Joe Hisaishi, who writes most of the music for Hayao Miyazaki's movies! There are several DVD editions of this movie on Amazon. Look for the one with 2 discs and the name Joe Hisaishi in the description!

Thats the first time I met the same score I have on my DVD!
pubwebmaster - Posted on Nov 21, 2009
Despite all the versions that have come and gone in the DVD era, the definitive score for me is Carl Davis' from the Thames Silents edition, available on DVD in the UK in The Buster Keaton Chronicles from Network. The music used in this version doesn't really fit.
gollygeemily09 - Posted on Dec 7, 2009
is this the origional score?
fnordist - Posted on Jan 4, 2010
Question: I got a copy of the general, but i got no clue what version. The score is kinda strange. sorta childish score, with a sad violin and some chinese like guitar.
mocthezuma - Posted on Jan 6, 2010
Alright. Can someone please, instead of just complaining about the music, confirm what the original score should be, and who composed it? I see alot of people recommend the 1995 version scored by Scott Joplin, but that can hardly be the true original score. Was there maybe no original score, or has been lost?
Findulidas - Posted on Jan 28, 2010
Its a silent film. Music was added by the distributors. It probably wasnt made with a specific score in mind.

Still around at a museum in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Just think...when this movie came out, many Civil War vets were still alive!

Did the music we can hear on this clip appear in the original movie?
