"You give these guys a microphone and you let them go, " said one producer who asked that his name not be used. "I know we usually like to avoid politics at the Oscars, but who else were we gonna turn to? Besides, we had Al Gore on last year's telecast, and he was a hit. This was the natural next step." Producers said the candidates standing in for the stars did well, for the most part. But as you'll see on the tapes, these political animals couldn't help injecting issues from the campaign into their film introductions. "It was a novel concept and the tapes make for an alternate take on the Oscars, " said one top executive. "But all things being equal, I'm glad we have our writers back on the job churning out corny jokes for our stars to stumble over as they misread the Teleprompter on Oscar night."
