They can also be detained for up to 18 months and banned from re - entering the EU for five years. One of those who would have been affected by the new rules is 28 - year - old Senegalese Omar Bar. The boat he travelled on to Europe sank. He was the only survivor. Now he lives legally in France and campaigns to alert young Africans to the risks they are taking if they try to reach Europe. This is his story.
