Y cuenta la anecdota que el Rey Elvis Presley tuvo la oportunidad de representar el papel de actor principal, pero su manager le disuadió de la idea. Cuando vio la cantidad de Oscar que se llevó el musical, lógicamente se arrepintió. A continuación despidió a su manager y contrató los servicios de un matón a sueldo para que le cortara las manos, la lengua, el pene y le sacara los ojos, según cuenta la leyenda. En un principio, los productores no habían pensado en Natalie Wood para el papel de María. N. Wood estaba ocupada trabajando en el rodaje de Esplendor en la hierba con Warren Beatty, con quien mantenía un romance en aquel momento. Fue Warren Beatty el que se presentó al casting para el papel de Tony, siendo Natalie Wood la que leía el papel de María como favor. Irónicamente, los productores se entusiasmaron con la interpretación de Natalie pero lo rechazaron a Warren Beatty.
